Oh My Grammys!

Last night the 52nd Grammy Awards aired on CBS and here is a recap of Grammy highlights for those of you who missed the action.
The show opened with a fantastic performance by Lady Gaga of “Poker Face” (the winner of Best Dance Recording) set to a backdrop of The Fame Factory. Gaga was then thrown into a fire pit where she emerged sitting at a double sided piano opposite Sir Elton John. The duo performed “Speechless” with elements of “Your Song” thrown in for good measure.
Pink performed “Glitter in the Air” in cirque-du-soleil style spectacle where she and three women performed aerobatics suspended above the audience. Pink was dipped into water and then spun, creating a beautiful, sparkling show. I was impressed by her physical and vocal abilities in the act, though unfortunately the singer did not take home any awards.
Michael Jackson’s children, Paris and Prince Jackson, accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of their late father. Although Prince’s speech was a bit jumbled, the children were a touching presence, reminding viewers at home that Michael Jackson was a person beyond the image and the tabloids.
Beyoncé was queen of the night, winning six awards and performing an intense rendition of “If I Were a Boy.” The performance suddenly shifted to an equally charged cover of Alanis Morisette’s “You Oughta Know,” before finally shifting back into “If I Were a Boy” (after thrashing on the floor, of course). Love her or hate her, Beyoncé showed her gravitas as an entertainer and seriously brought down the house. Her six wins give her the record for most Grammys a woman has earned in one year. Way to go, Sasha Fierce.
Album of the Year went to Taylor Swift for Fearless, Record of the Year went to Kings of Leon for “Use Somebody,” Song of the Year went to Beyoncé for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It),” Best New Artist went to Zac Brown Band (I was very surprised), and Rock Album of the Year went to Green Day for 21st Century Breakdown. For the full list of winners (and unsuccessful nominees) check out the Grammy website.
Overall, the 52nd Grammys was a fairly entertaining night of mainstream music television.
